On Friday morning, Q-dance announced the festival would close after Dutch authorities issued a historic Code Red heat warning. Organizers made the decision after consulting emergency services and local officials.

“This is the first time the Netherlands has ever issued a Code Red warning because of extreme heat,” organizers said.

Q-dance described the cancellation as “the unthinkable” and acknowledged the devastating impact on everyone involved.

Why Authorities Took Action

The cancellation comes as the Netherlands experiences one of its most severe heatwaves in recent history.

The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) officially declared a national heatwave on Thursday. Forecasts now predict temperatures between 36°C and 39°C across much of the country. Some isolated areas could even approach 40°C.

The KNMI does not issue Code Red warnings based on temperature alone. Officials also evaluate the wider impact on public safety and critical infrastructure.

Thousands of Weekend Warriors are now preparing to leave the festival grounds.

Authorities warned that extreme temperatures could disrupt transportation, damage infrastructure, and place significant pressure on emergency services and hospitals.

Representatives from the National Crisis Centre, police, fire services, ProRail, and Rijkswaterstaat (The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management) all participated in discussions before the warning was issued.

Belgium’s neighboring weather agency had already declared its own Code Red warning for regions bordering the Netherlands, adding further urgency to the situation.

Only hours earlier, organizers had announced reduced attendance by canceling Friday and Saturday day tickets while allowing weekend campers to remain onsite.

Those measures were intended to reduce crowd density and improve access to shade and medical services.
