A new study is shedding light on the powerful emotional effects of electronic music, revealing that it may help reduce anxiety while strengthening feelings of joy, immersion, and human connection.

The research, backed by AlphaTheta and led by Music And Movement Is Medicine (MIM) founder Emma Marshall alongside Professor Paul Dolan of the London School of Economics, explored how guided movement sessions paired with electronic music impact both the body and mind. The study was conducted at Drumsheds in London, the city’s large-scale cultural and electronic music venue, where around 60 participants took part in a structured experience that evolved from breathing exercises and seated movement into full-scale dancing.

Throughout the session, researchers monitored participants’ heart rates, collecting more than 600,000 heartbeats worth of biometric data. During the calmer breathing and seated portions, heart rate variability increased by 18.5 percent, a physiological marker often linked to reduced stress and improved nervous system regulation. As the music intensified and participants transitioned into free movement, heart rates rose while feelings of immersion remained elevated, even during slower breakdown moments.

Self-reported responses from participants also pointed to significant emotional benefits. Anxiety levels dropped, while feelings of joy and social connection increased across the experience.

According to the researchers, the findings highlight how DJs and electronic music can actively influence emotional and physiological states, turning the dancefloor into more than just entertainment. The study suggests that structured movement and rhythm-based experiences could potentially play a larger role in stress relief, wellness, and social bonding moving forward.
