France’s long-running tension with underground rave culture, known in Europe as “free parties” is entering a completely new phase. A proposed law in Marseille could introduce heavy fines for up to €3,000 for those attending and/or organizing illegal parties. Marseille’s proposed Illegal Rave Law targets both organizers and attendees, a classical move when trying to make a scene disappear in its entirety. Under the proposal, ravers could face fines of €1,500 for attending an unlicensed event. Said quantity could rise to €3,000 for repeat offenders. Organizers face even harsher penalties, including up to six months in prison and fines of up to €30,000 for events exceeding 250 attendees that do not hold the necessary permits.
