Ticket resale giant StubHub is facing renewed scrutiny after agreeing to pay $10 million to settle allegations from the Federal Trade Commission over deceptive ticket pricing practices. The case reported by Reuters centers on one of the most controversial issues in live event ticketing: hidden fees.

According to regulators, StubHub failed to clearly disclose the full price of tickets upfront—omitting mandatory service and fulfillment fees until later in the purchasing process. This practice violates the FTC’s “Fees Rule,” introduced in May 2025, which requires ticketing platforms to show the total price immediately and transparently.

The violations reportedly occurred over a short window between May 12 and May 14, 2025, shortly after the rule came into effect. During that period, some listings displayed base prices that excluded required fees, potentially misleading fans about the true cost of attending live events.

The $10 Million Settlement

As part of the settlement, StubHub will pay $10 million, which will be used to refund affected customers through a consumer redress program. Eligible users, those who purchased tickets during the impacted timeframe, can expect refunds covering fees such as service and fulfillment charges.

In addition to the financial penalty, StubHub is now required to:

• Clearly display the total ticket price upfront
• Avoid misrepresenting fees or final costs
• Ensure pricing transparency across all stages of the purchase process

Despite agreeing to the settlement, StubHub stated it disagrees with the FTC’s interpretation of the case but chose to resolve the matter and compensate affected users.

This case is part of a broader crackdown on so-called “drip pricing”, a tactic where additional fees are revealed only late in the checkout process. The practice has long frustrated concertgoers and festival fans, often turning what appears to be a reasonably priced ticket into a significantly more expensive purchase.
