Long whispered about in alternative healing circles and quietly sought out by veterans and addiction patients abroad, the psychoactive compound is now being fast-tracked into the American medical conversation.

The order directs federal agencies to accelerate research and streamline regulatory pathways for psychedelic-assisted therapies, signaling a dramatic shift in how the U.S. approaches mental health treatment. Ibogaine is a naturally occurring compound derived from an Africanshrub, often associated with treating addiction, PTSD, and depression. Despite its reputation, it remains a Schedule I substance in the U.S., meaning it’s currently classified alongside drugs with no accepted medical use.

The administration is backing the push with a reported $50 million investment into research, aiming to unlock new treatment options for what officials describe as a growing mental health crisis, particularly among veterans. Kennedy Jr., podcaster Joe Rogan, and other cabinet officials.

For years, Americans seeking ibogaine therapy have had to travel to countries like Mexico, operating in legal gray zones with limited oversight. Culturally, this moment hits different.
