Groove Cruise founder Jason Beukema‘s approach to dance music goes deeper than creating a successful floating festival, and that’s exactly what’s kept it going for more than two decades. Through Groove Cruise, he’s built a community rooted in connection, and that mindset carried beyond this year’s sailing in January and into South by Southwest and Miami Music Week in March. While loyal captains await the 2027 sailing, Beukema brought his Groove Effect message, which is the foundation of Groove Cruise, to two of the most important annual events involving dance music. 

At SXSW on March 13, Beukema headed up the panel, “The Groove Effect: Turning Communities into transformational movements.” The intimate conversation in Austin focused on mental health, connection, and what it actually means to build something sustainable in nightlife and festival culture. Instead of talking about growth in terms of scale, Beukema kept coming back to people. 

“You’ve heard of flow state, right?” said Beukema. “So flow state is like, you’re in this flow for an hour. You’re trying to get back into the flow state, but what is your groove? Your groove is something that you can live in. It’s not just a state, it’s not just a flow. It’s like, you’re in your groove or you’re out of the groove. So how do you live in your groove?”

Beukema spoke about the responsibility that comes with running a brand like Groove Cruise, especially one that attracts such a loyal and emotionally invested audience. Among the questions that attendees asked was which of The 8 Waves of the Groove Effect has been the hardest to implement.

“Probably the legacy, the last one. Yeah, probably the legacy. And again, we’re just learning how to kind of incorporate that,” Beukema said. “Surrender is part of the final one, like surrender to what’s going on in yourself and in your truth and also like, stuff happens. The universe, God, whatever you believe in, there are signs. If you’re going in the wrong direction or you’re going in the right direction and stuff just happens. It’s kind of what infinity is, what you want to be remembered as. I feel like that’s a tougher one that we haven’t quite figured out.”

That same message carried over to Miami just weeks later at the SHIFT conference during music week. The message landed with a crowd already tuned into industry conversations. Miami Music Week often revolves around nonstop events and packed schedules, so hearing a discussion grounded in mental health and sustainability offered a different kind of reset. Beukema spoke candidly about what’s worked, what hasn’t and where he’s still learning.
